After looking at some of the work of Syd Mead it is clear to see that he is one of the greatest concept artists. What i like about his work is that some of it was done before i was born, but yet his works look very contemporary with his own unique style. Taken into account what he said in one of his interview. These days it seems that there isn't any creativity new stuff just comes out and looks the same. The only annoying thing about Syd is that he has no influences, but it is clear to see that in todays society he is an inspiration and influence for many.

This is a image from Blade Runner, One of the most successful films in history. The reason i say this is because some of the latest films such as Star wars and Batmans Gotham city have been heavly influenced by the wok of Syd Mead. Even though the works of Syd are quite old they are still relivant in todays society. His work is very unique, even when i looked at a documentary of he claims that he isn't influenced by anything. He just has a vision. Even when i watched one of his latest videos he claims that now a days there isn't any creativity.

After doing some research i found out that the director of Irobot Alex Proyas was influenced and inspired by Isaac Asimov. Isaac Asimov was a writter, and the exact book that inspired Alex Proyas is Nightfall. I found this profound that one of the biggest films made in history was inspired by a novel. This information has helped me be more open minded in my research, and to look at all sources.

Reflextion

For my environment i feel that i want to add some culture into it. I feel that it would make our environment stand out if i add some west African culture into it. Keeping in mind that the society we live in today is very multicultural, it would be intersting to incorporate some culture into it. The first thing i intend to do is look at African masks, and the different textures that they have on them. While i am doing my research i am going to keep in mind how i can incorporate African designs into my modern/ futuristic environment. My aim is to make this environment as unique as possible, and not to be too cliche. What i intend to do is look at the movie Irobot for referencing and find out who directed and produced it, and then i am going to find out what inspired them to create the movie.

Reflextion

After talking to my lecturer and my work group, we are going to do more research into the directors of films, and what inspired them and how they got there ideas. Because our environment is going to be

I like this building and i think the peson that designed it got there inspiration from some of the buildings in Dubi. The buildings in Dubi tend to twist and it gives it a stylized look.

When looking at this picture i can see the use of different shapes that is going on. It looks to me that the person that created this was very open minded and wanted to design something different and not cliche.

Looking at this book has made me a bit more open minded when looking for ideas for the type of shape i want for the buildings.

I have done research on a paticular book called Digital Architecture now by Neil Spiller. I think the book is fantastic and has inspired me to design buildings that are modern.

Although this map doesn't use colours like the first post on maps, it is still pretty much clear. Clarity is important in everything because it stops confusions and misunderstandings. the thing i like most about this image is the fact that it uses symbols to to direct the person using it.

Even though this map isn't formal it is easy to identify where what street is where. A good map has to be readable as well as understandable.

Research on Birds eye views of Cities

This is part of London, when looking at it it is easy to see where certain areas are. When making a map it has to be very clear so the person using it can read it. This map is clear and simple and gets a thumbs up from me.
After careful consideration the group and i have come to a decision on what role we will be playing as a whole. Today i have found out that i will be designing the exterior of some of the buildings in our environment. In order to get this environment started we our going to come up with a plan of the environment as a whole, because you can't build something out of nothing. So once again in depth research will have to be done on birds eye view of cities.

Because the lighting in this image its a bit difficult to see all of the buildings. What i have noticed in the image is the different shapes with in it such as rectangles, cylinders, and triangles. This reminds me that buildings are made up of different shapes, so baring that in mind i am going to look more into shapes.

I actually sure this building on my way to uni, the way some bits of the building dent in and extrude out is very effective indeed, creating a nice shape. this is very creative and i find it very iconic because its so unusually shaped. The name of the book that i got this from is London's Contemporary Architecture.

The reason why i have chosen this image for research is because of its share simplicity. The long strictures in the middle make the two buildings look as one, and that stands out to me and it looks original.

I like the diferrent types of shapes of the buildings, the buildings actually remind me of new york city, in terms of the layout and congestion of buildings.

As well as looking at research online i have also been looking at books as well. I have been analyzing a book called modern architectures in history. I thought that it would be useful to look at prehistoric buildings as well as modern ones.

Overview

So far i have been doing research on futuristic environments, as this is the theme. I have been looking at all types of buildings, world wide. I am planning to do more and more research. The plan is to go out into London and take pictures of buildings, and to get a fill of the city. So far everything is going well, im just a bit worried about my final designs and if they are going to look similar to other buildings. I admire the buildings in Dubai because of the different shapes of the buildings, they are very stylized and stand out a lot. What i intend to go is look at all differnt types of buildings, not just futuristic designs, because i would just be limiting myself.

When Looking at environments i wanted to especially look at New York city, simply because of the skyscrapers that its, such as the Empire State building.

I think the person that designed this, took everything into consideration when designing it. It looks to me that they took colour into consideration, which helps portray the mood of sadness and destruction.

This image almost compliments the previous image, in a sense that they both have elements of the same type of colours. But i prefer the previous image.

This is a beautiful piece of work that has been done. For our group i would recommend using this for reference. This is because at the end of the day we are going for a look that is dark, but at the same time a bit light.

I quite like like the model that has been done in this pictures. The thing that caught my attention is the shapes that have been use, and how unique they are.

For the environment i am doing i am going to look at games environments, and the type of colours and designs that they use, as this is going to be very useful.

Monday 11 January 2010

I have chosen to put this image on my blog because of the different shapes within it. I like the way the building has been structured. This image has got me thinking about the types of shapes i am going to use for my buildings, i guess it is good to start thinking a head.

Once again i am looking at different types of buildings. But with all of that i am going to be open minded about what types of shapes i am going to use, i don't want to limit myself in any way. Looking at this picture it reminds me of the O2 arena, with its dome shape.

Looking at these images it reminds me of shapes and sizes. For my futuristic environment there are going to be a lot of hard shapes. There are going to be some unusual shaped buildings, because at the same time i want my environment to stand out and that is the feel i want.

I like the feel of this image, it reminds me of London. When i come up with my designs for my environment i intend to look at normal buildings as well as futuristic ones.

Friday 8 January 2010

This is a building in Dubai from Dubai. The thing that i most like about this building is the way one part of the building of the building slopes to one side. After looking at most of the buildings from Saudi Arabia it seems that most of their buildings are conventional.

I like the view of Dubai and the layout of all the building, composition is very important when designing buildings within a city, so i will be doing a lot of research into that. Composition is one thing that is worrying me at the moment, but with the right mentality and research i should be okay.

There is no doubt that this is the tallest building in the world. The thing that i like about this building is the shape and how everything is put together, i think it works very well. The only thing that i dislike is the hight, i think it is too tall.

I like the shape of this building, to be honest i am not to sure weather or not this is a building. I think the spiral shape that is going on, it is very unique and it stands out a lot.

Thursday 7 January 2010

Looking at this image the thing that stands out the most is the shapes of the buildings. Shapes are always something to take into consideration when designing and constructing buildings and its sourroundings.

Looking at this image reminds me of composition when designing my environment. I like the layout of the buildings in this image, there is a range of tall and small buildings. I also like the perspective view of the city.

Research

I like the range of colours that are used in this image. The range of colours that are used in this image are something that i might use myself.

Breif

For this project you will be working in teams of four or five students. You will all be working towards a final collaborative short film but will have the opportunity to fulfil clear and separate roles within the team.

• You will be working to create an animated environment.
• You will be collaborating not only with the other animators in your team, but also with designers from the environment design course.
• Their designs will form the starting point for your work.

This environment will be modelled in 3D, UV mapped, textured and lit based upon the research of materials and environments as initially designed or propsed by IDEAS students. This research will consist of practical site visits (such as the trip to Barcelona and alternative London based venues) and associated drawing and photography, as well as academic research via the web and the LRC.

This environment must demonstrate integral animation, it could be mechanical such as machinery, doors, windows, windmills etc, or it could be more organic, and atmospheric, such as the effects of wind on plants, weather conditions etc. It could be a much more long term animation to show the effect of years passing, rather than minutes. For those of you who feel that you are more character animators than computer visualisers you can focus upon contextualising the designed environment by populating it with characters using that environment, it may be that the environment is being used in an unintended or unexpected way that has evolved through public interaction with the space. (Was the South Bank designed for skateboarding or parkour?).

It may be easier for you to think about defining the way in which you will approach this project by choosing one of the themes listed below.

a) Changes over time (historic).
b) Changes in weather or lighting (climatic).
c) Changes in use of the environment (contextual).

Although you will be working as part of a team towards your final animation, you will also be required to provide evidence of your individual contribution to the project via a blogged design journal where you will document your personal research, experimentation, and acquiring of new skills.
